Ever since he made his way into the country music scene, the East Tennessee native has consistently remained one of the genre’s greatest performers. Take, for instance, this Kenny Chesney and Gretchen Wilson‘s “Hurt So Good” riotous performance which absolutely showcased how easy-going and fun-loving our four-time CMA’s Entertainer of the Year is.
In a short clip of an old live performance we’ve found, Chesney asked the rowdy crowd to listen up as “this is the part of the show where we decided to turn the volume up just a little bit.”

The country star then went on transforming John Mellencamp’s ’80s smash rock song into an honest-to-goodness country hit. And as expected, the crowd went wild the moment Chesney belted out the opening verse. As if that wasn’t enough, he made sure to crank up the heat, asking Wilson out to conclude the rock ballad with him as a duet.
The two talented country superstars sang together, got up close and personal all through the steamy performance.
Story Behind The Song
In a 1982 interview, John Mellencamp revealed that he wrote “Hurt So Good” in just three minutes with his childhood friend and occasional writing partner just to fool around.
The song was then released as the first single off his 1982 album American Fool.
With its opening rock-and-roll rhythm, its blazing guitar riff, and Mellencamp’s poignant, grimly croon on the lyrics about embracing life, despite its often-rough edges, “Hurt So Good” reached No. 2 on Billboard Hot 100. It even helped Mellencamp take home the Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male, at the 25th Grammy Awards.
