Despite Freezing Temperature, Guards at the Tomb of the Unknowns Are Unfazed

As the polar vortex continues to cripple more than half of the United States especially the Midwest, there are these great people who seem to be unfazed by the sub-zero temperatures.

This ongoing polar freeze has dilapidated many states and millions of the American population. Below freezing temperatures and added wind chill have caused the mercury to stagger down to as low as -70 degrees Fahrenheit in places such as in North Dakota.

Even major transportations were affected. In fact, a number of flights have been grounded and many people stocked up on supplies to brave the weather. Worse, some communities have been cut off from electricity and other services for days. In addition, some postal workers were even told to stay home as to avoid the severe cold outside.

Despite the historic inclement weather, there are still a few men and women in the armed forces who never cease to perform their duties. No matter what nature puts in front of them, they remain unfazed and strong. An example, in particular, are the guards serving at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Serving on Duty, Honoring the Soldiers

Located in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, the Tomb of the Unknowns honors the soldiers who have passed without their remains being identified. It’s a place of solace, comfort, and relief. It is a place of honor and pride for these people who have sacrificed their lives for this great nation.

To honor all those missing soldiers, guards walk and protect the grounds every day of the year. They do this around the clock, including the past 48 hours which were really freezing.

There has yet to be a day when it’s too cold, too windy or too hot. But, it doesn’t matter for them as long as they perform their task and duty. To note, even during the destructive Hurricane Katrina, the guards braved the winds and remained on post.

To have a knowledge on how the guards do this ceremony, check out this video clip that was taken in January last year. The temperature during that time was also sub-zero (even though it’s not as cold as compared to the last few days). Despite this, we commend the men and women who cling true to their duty, willing to serve others. Salute to you all!
