In 1960, Skeeter Davis recorded and released the song “(I Can’t Help You) I’m Falling Too” as a response to Hank Locklin’s most successful recording and second No. 1 hit on the country charts entitled, “Please Help Me, I’m Falling.”
The single became Davis’ highest-charting single at that time, peaking at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country songs chart. It also helped Davis enter the Billboard Hot 100 for the very first time, where it reached No. 39.
Soon enough, “(I Can’t Help You) I’m Falling Too” was included in Davis’ sophomore album, Here’s the Answer – where she recorded reply tunes to major hit singles by various country artists. The record also included original versions of the tracks. In addition to Hank Locklin’s “Please Help Me, I’m Falling,” there’s also Jim Reeves’ “He’ll Have to Go” and Floyd Cramer’s “Last Date.”
A Temptation That’s Hard To Win
Written by Skeeter Davis along with Hal Blair and Don Robertson, “(I Can’t Help You) I’m Falling Too” tells the narrative of a woman who found love with a man who belongs to another. While they both know they’re wrong and that they could never be happy living in sin – the feelings they have for each other are just so difficult for them to resist.
Davis responded to the man who’s begging her to help him walk away from temptation in her Kentucky soprano voice, exemplifying her trademark blending of mainstream pop and country-and-western.
Make sure to listen to “(I Can’t Help You) I’m Falling Too” by Skeeter Davis. She truly possessed one of the most purely beautiful voices to ever grace the history of country music.
