You have probably heard several versions of “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and couldn’t pinpoint who owns the original. Lucky for you, Don Gibson is generous enough to share the song with his fans. This was one of Gibson’s greatest classics, a fact not known by many, but everyone should know.

The Country Hall of Famer released the ballad on February 7, 1958, for his first studio album Oh Lonesome Me. Gibson composed the song himself on June 7, 1957, in Knoxville, Tennessee, under the RCA Victor Records. It climbed to No. 7 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs, No. 81 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and No. 2 on Norway’s VG-Lista.

Gibson talked about the writing process of the song in Dorthy Horstman’s 1975 book Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy saying, “I sat down to write a lost love ballad. After writing several lines to the song, I looked back and saw the line, ‘I can’t stop loving you.’ I said, ‘That would be a good title,’ so I went ahead and rewrote it in its present form.”

To this day, “I Can’t Stop Loving You” remains an enduring melody that even the younger generation enjoys.

Meaning of the Song

Don Gibson’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You” has become a fan favorite at karaoke. Being the mastermind of the country classic, this became the career-defining moment for the icon with more than 700 covers in different genres and thirty million records globally. The number of covers went up until Gibson’s death in 2003. Ray Charles may have popularized the song in 1962, but the masterpiece wouldn’t have been born without Gibson’s artistry in establishing a modern Nashville sound.

When he saw the potential of the line “I can’t stop loving you,” he took his time writing the song and built the concept around it. Since its release, the ballad pushed the boundaries of traditional country music. The lyrics were simple, but that’s what made it to the mainstream.

Gibson’s smooth, expressive voice suits the forlorn and wistful theme of the ballad. The opening line, “I can’t stop loving you, so I’ve made up my mind,” instantly gives the idea that his love was potent, yet the relationship has been painful. “To live in the memory of such an old lonesome time” indicates that the memory of his past romantic relationship no longer serves him, but he still visits there because his feelings for his lover never withered. He finally decided to hold onto the memories even if it meant staying lonely at present. Sad it may sound, but not being able to move on from a former lover must be one of the most devastating feelings to exist. Hence, instead of dealing with his past in a healthy manner, he chose to live in it.
