Josh Turner‘s grandma, Lois Cunningham, proved that music is in their blood. With her performance back in February 2016, the people of the Grand Ole Opry gave her a standing ovation.

And rightfully so, because her piano piece of the gospel classic “How Great Thou Art” is hauntingly beautiful.

Let us look further into the performance of this amazing 98-year-old woman.

Josh Turner Introduces her Grandma to the Grand Ole Opry

Josh Turner opened the performance by introducing her Grandma-in-law:

“My Wife’s 98-year-old grandmother is…her name is Lois Cunningham and she’s gonna come out and play on the Grand Ole Opry stage for the very first time. This is Lois Cunningham and she’s gonna play when she’s ready.”

After getting assistance, she started playing the piano beautifully. The audience was immediately captured by the soulful piano rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” It was only her and the piano on that big stage. This just made the performance alluring since it captured the simplicity of the song.

The performance lasted for about three minutes. It was immediately welcomed by a standing ovation of the whole Grand ole Opry Audience. She was then hugged by the country icon Josh Turner.

After her performance, the Grand Ole Opry’s official youtube account posted the video and got 12 million views as of today.

Who is Lois Cunningham?

Sadly, this amazing lady passed away on August 26, 2018. She died peacefully on a Sunday afternoon with her daughter, son-in-law and Rev. Dr. Joe Ford and other family members.

But, her legacy will remain. Right after her debut performance at the Opry, she instantly became a celebrity. In fact, on her 100th birthday, the Mayor of Valdosta and the Board of Commissioners for Lowndes County honored her with a proclamation of “Lois Cunningham Day.”

This woman has been teaching music for 30 years. So even at the age of 98, her piano skills are as natural as breathing air. She was also an active member of the church and maybe that is why she was blessed to have a long life.

Now that she is in God’s home, we know that she is in a better place. And maybe, still playing the piano.
