These powerhouses getting together for an all-star female country supergroup, known as The Highwomen, Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, Natalie Hemby, and Maren Morris banned together for one heck of a badass female musical supergroup.
Now, new material from The Highwomen is on its way, according to Carlile. She had given the update on the project backstage at the Nissan Stadium before joining her fellow bandmate Morris for a surprise performance at the 2019 CMA Fest. Carlile said that fans don’t have to wait any longer, as the next steps of the project are being talked about and on the works.
“Tour is being talked about. Music is done. [The] single’s coming out in July. And our first show is going to be at the Newport Folk Festival. We’ve got a couple of really cool surprise things planned that I think you’re going to be really excited about.”
Joining the four main Highwomen are a rotating cast of other female artists, and they began generating significant buzz after it formed in early 2019. The most recent and notable performance that the foursome had was their tribute to Loretta Lynn back in April.
Although at this point, it is unclear whether or not Hemby is a permanent fixture of the supergroup, Carlile isn’t keen on closing that topic just yet.
“Natalie was quite an early addition. She just wasn’t sure, and we weren’t sure, what ‘permanent’ even meant. All we knew is that we wanted to open the door of that studio and say, ‘All of you come on in with your songs. Let’s sing. Let’s start a project. And it just wound up that the four of us solidified and became the Highwomen.”
The Highwomen
They took their name from the infamous country supergroup, The Highwaymen. The group consisted of Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash.
Morris and Carlile shared some tidbits about the new project in a Rolling Stone interview.
“The whole idea started with Amanda Shires. Like we were basically hanging out and we got to know each other, became fast friends, fell in love, and she said we should start like a political movement.”
