The Lord knows no boundaries when it comes to giving a blessing to everyone. This classic gospel hymn reminds us that we should give thanks and be grateful for our everyday life. Don Moen does the song justice with his soulful rendition and it makes us really think of all the blessings we have received in life.

Let us take a look at the origin of the song and how it became one of the most popular contemporary hymns of today.

Don Moen Reminds Us to “Give Thanks” and Be Grateful for Our Blessings

The song inspires us to be grateful for a wonderful life that has been given to us. Ironically, this beautiful hymn has a sad background story coming from the songwriter. It came about when Henry Smith just finished his seminary school but got the saddest news of his life. He was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition that made him practically blind. It affected his life because he was having a hard time looking for a job as well.

With all that is happening in his life, he turned to the Lord. He remembered the scripture:

“For you know the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake, He became poor so that you through His poverty might become rich.”

The scripture became his inspiration to go on in life because no matter what happens, he knows that he is in good hands.

We should all believe that every day is a blessing. Some people don’t have the luxury of waking up in their bed. Some people may not have another chance of tomorrow due to accidents or serious illnesses. Our perspective of day to day living is becoming ordinary that we forget about the extraordinary power that is at work to make us safe. Our Lord always provides us with protection and guidance, and for that, we should always be grateful.

If some people who are not privileged enough can still be grateful about their life, why can’t you?
