“In the Garden” is one of the gospel songs that holds a strong grip in our hearts. The simple message of the song and the wonderful way it has been delivered by different artists makes it instantly special. We have heard the song a thousand times from different singers of different genres. Some names that are worth mentioning are Dolly Parton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Elvis Presley. All these artists gave their own touch for this classic gospel song.

The Message of “In the Garden”

The song talks about Jesus standing by our side every single step we take. We often think that God is with us because we experience failure or hardship. We wonder why we are going through life with all of these. We question where God is when we need him. All of this uncertainty and shaking of our faith lead us to our lack of faith believing in him. However, we have to remember that God always works in silence, which means God walks by our side even if we think He’s not there. This is what the hymn “In the Garden” wants us to know. The author wants us to be reminded that God is on our side every single day.

The Making of the Song

The hymn was written by C. Austin Miles in 1913, and it was said that he wrote the song without having a wonderful view of the garden. Instead, he wrote the song opposite of what should have inspired him.

“In a cold, dreary and leaky basement in Pitman, New Jersey that didn’t even have a window in it let alone a view of a garden.”

Imagine how he was sitting there and thinking of something beautiful to write such an inspiring song. Miles may have been visited by God to put the words into his head for him to write the wonderful song.

Different Versions

“In the Garden” was first noticed by the public in the 20th century. When it became a worldwide phenomenon, many artists decided to record their version of the song. Here are some artists and their rendition of the hymn.
