Since 2011, The Voice coaches have never ran out of mischievous ideas and ways to have fun. From their individualized strategy on how to get an artist of their choice to their side to their impromptu lines, they certainly have given The Voice viewers a lot of amusement while in search for the next great talents. But none of it beats their 2018 Halloween performance of Blake Shelton’s hit song “Honey Bee.”
Hollywood Blvd. is perhaps one of the biggest stage for street performers across the world. From Spiderman to Jack Sparrow, you name it, the streets of Los Angeles have everything you could ask for. You might also see some street performers resting in between their shows. But adding to Hollywood Blvd.’s present attraction was the performance done by the voice coaches which was an instant crowd-magnet.
The Voice has been a show which featured multiple known stars of the music industry. Aside from the show’s long time hosts and buddies, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, there’s also the cast. Among them were Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Gwen Stefani, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Shakira, Pharrell, and Kelly Clarkson. Together and in harmony, the show has truly spoiled the viewers seeing this cast of stars compete with one another.
The Voice Coaches’ Surprise Performance
Aside from the fun filled episodes of the show, The Voice coaches also do occasional performances outside the studio. One example is the 2018 Halloween performance.
The Voice coaches had perfectly selected their stage outside the Historic TLC Chinese theater. It was a historic theater built in the late 1920’s. Some parts were originally Chinese which have been imported. The theater’s location was just right on the area of Walk of Fame. But it was not just for the Walk of Fame that the TLC Chinese theater was significant. It also had footprints and signatures of nearly 200 Hollywood artist at the theater’s forecourt. It also featured imprints of items used in Hollywood films like the guns used by William S. Hart and Roy Rogers, the facial print of John Barrymore known as “The Great Profile,” and many more.
This spot was familiar to everyone including the Voice coaches, but most specially to Adam Levine who got his start in the Walk of Fame in 2017. Adam Levine stood side by side with fellow coach Blake Shelton who attended Levine’s ceremony.
Because the Halloween season was just around the corner, the Voice Coaches chose to dress up like superheroes and villains for their surprise performance. They also had their parts ready.
The friendship between Adam Levine and Blake Shelton as seen in the show was also evident in their street performance. Blake dressed as batman while Levine play the sidekick, Robin. Jennifer Hudson looked fierce in her cat woman suit, but the one who stole the stage was Kelly Clarkson dressed as a goofy-looking penguin.
“Honey Bee”
“Honey Bee” was first heard during the 2011 Academy of Country Music Awards. It was written by Rhett Atkins and Ben Hayslip and was recorded by country music singer Blake Shelton. The song was released right after the awards.
Critics praised Blake Shelton’s charismatic singing and considered it a perfect match for the song as it gives a “timeless” feel for it. But some critics also criticized the lyrical structure and labeled it as overly repetitive. Despite the negative feedback, the song was launched in the market and sold over 138,000 digital downloads in its first week. This set a new record for the most first-week download by a male country singer.
In the seventh week, “Honey Bee” was a certified digital gold and was hailed as the fastest growing single ever to sell over 500,000 digital copies by a male country soloist. The song also became Blake Shelton’s ninth number one single on the country charts.
