During one of the blind auditions in The Voice Season 15, country crooner Dave Fenley took on Travis Tritt’s “Help Me Hold On,” and two coaches, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton can’t help but turn their chairs around. With the help of his mother, Fenley chose Shelton to be his coach, leaving Clarkson in the dust.
“Hats off for your song selection,” Blake told the aspiring country artist. “That’s to me one of [Tritt’s] greatest hits. Anybody that crossed all genres, they stuck to what they did best, and people found them. People came to Randy Travis. He didn’t want to have a song on the pop charts.”
A year after that, Fenley once again slayed “Help Me Hold On.” His rendition was uploaded on his YouTube channel, and it has garnered over three million views as of writing. “The response to my cover of “Help Me Hold On” has been absolutely unreal,” Fenley wrote on his social media. It has inspired him to keep his cover series going.
A Man’s Heartbreaking Plea
“Help Me Hold On” is a song co-written by Travis Tritt with songwriter Pat Terry. Tritt started his career as one of the famous members of the country music “Class of ’89”, which included Alan Jackson, Clint Black, and Garth Brooks.
He released “Help Me Hold On” three decades ago as the second single from his debut album Country Club. The track reached No. 1 in both the United States and Canada, becoming Tritt’s first No. 1 hit. You could say that that the success of the song secured Tritt’s status as a powerful force in country music.
“Help Me Hold On” is a ballad that tells a man’s heartbreaking plea to his lover. As his significant other starts packing up her things, ready to leave, he finally realizes that he needs to change to make her happy. The man desperately pleas in the chorus for her woman to stay with him. “Once our love was strong, it can be again. You said it takes two to make love last. You were right all along, so help me hold on,” he sings.
Taking Country Classic to Whole New Level
In 2016, Travis Tritt took “Help Me Hold On” to a whole new level when he started performing it acoustically as part of his A Man and His Guitar tour. You’ll hear nothing but the sounds of Tritt and his guitar during his performances. There are no drums, no background singers, nothing. The country superstar has successfully transformed the classic “Help Me Hold On” into a chill-inducing acoustic version.
And for some greater news, Travis Tritt has recently announced that he is gearing up for the release of his first new album in 12 years. Although Tritt has not yet revealed most details about his next project, it will mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the country star.
Are we going to hear another take of “Help Me Hold On?” Well, we don’t know yet! The only thing we’re sure about is that whichever version of the song you’d listen to, it will a hundred percent give you goosebumps!
