Get your tissues ready because Luke Bryan’s “Build Me A Daddy,” will likely make you cry. It’s bound to tug some heartstrings, even for big tough guys. In fact, Bryan said, “I’ve played this song for a lot of my hardcore buddies, and it chokes them up.”
The poignant song tells the story of a young boy who walks into a wooden toy shop and shows the owner a photo of a soldier who appears to be his father. He sweetly asks him to “Build Me A Daddy.”
“Could you build me a daddy? Strong as Superman/Make him ten feet tall, with a southern drawl and a crooked smile if you can/’Cause I sure miss him/ Maybe you could bring him back? / If I walked in with him, it’d sure make momma happy/ If you could build me a daddy,” Bryan sings throughout the heart-wrenching chorus.
“There are people out there who are going to really, really relate to this song and it’s going to affect them in a beautiful way,” Bryan wrote on Instagram during the song’s release, adding, “[Build Me A Daddy] tells the story of a boy and his dad in a beautiful and emotional way. I hope this song and this story touches you, in the same way, it touched me.”
In a video on his Instagram Story, Luke Bryan told fans that after he heard the song, he “knew” it had to be a part of his new album. “Certainly being a dad, it really touched me in a special way,” he said. “Country music is certainly about storytelling, and this song does such a great job of telling the story.”
Luke Bryan Also Released The Music Video of The Poignant Song
The country star offered a live take of the new song with a poignant, socially distanced performance on one episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Bryan performed the song solo, strumming his electric guitar and sitting in front of a microphone in a church while the light stream in through the stained-glass windows next to the star.
He also debuted a music video for the new song, with a simple treatment that allows viewers to focus mostly on the story. In the clip, Luke Bryan can be seen sitting alone in an empty, run-down house, strumming his guitar and gazing out the window as he sings.
As the song ends, two boys ran up and wrapped Luke in a hug, highlighting the relationship the singer has with his young sons, 12-year-old Thomas Boyer and 9-year-old Tatum Christopher. You can also be a part of Bryan’s “Build Me A Daddy” fan video by taking a photo with the father figure in your life and upload it on Luke Bryan’s official website.
Released early this June, just right in time for Father’s Day, Bryan celebrated the holiday by sharing a snap of his own dad on social media. “Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there today. Especially mine,” he captioned the black-and-white photo. “Love ya, Daddy.”
Luke Bryan also received a tribute post from his wife, Caroline Bryan. Caroline shared a slideshow of photos of her husband with their two sons, Bo and Tate, their nephew, Til, and their two nieces, Jordan and Kris. “Happy Father’s Day Love Bug. Today is your day…you can fish and golf all you want, and I can’t get mad,” Caroline wrote in the caption. “We all love you to the moon and back.”
“Build Me a Daddy” was written by Josh Thompson, Jake Mitchell, and Brett Tyler, and it will be on Bryan’s new album Born Here Live Here Die Here, which will be released on August 7. The singer also recently announced that his “Proud To Be Right Here Tour” will be rescheduled to 2021.
