It’s been nearly six years since country superstars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert announced their divorce in July 2015. Still, many country fans are wondering what’s the real story behind one of the biggest celebrity breakups there is.

It seemed like one minute the couple had the most perfect relationship, and the next, their union was shockingly beyond repair. What has really happened? Let’s take a look back at Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton‘s relationship timeline and the different reasons that somewhat led to the end of their marriage.

It Was In 2005 When They First Met

Lambert and Shelton had known each other for quite some time, but the two got the chance to get to know each other much deeper when they were paired up to perform the 1981 country hit, “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma,” during the CMT 100 Greatest Duets special in September 2005.

Many were impressed on how amazing their on-stage chemistry was. Even Shelton admitted that he never had that instant spark with anybody. “I was falling in love with her, right there on stage,” he said.

The only problem was that Shelton was a married man to his first wife Kaynette Williams, while Lambert was engaged to country singer Jeff Allen McManus.

But when you know, you know! Five months after that performance, Shelton filed divorce from Williams, and Lambert broke off her engagement – though both denied the rumors that it was their blossoming relationship that caused the following breakups.

In 2007, Lambert and Shelton finally went public with their relationship, posing together for the very first time at the 2007 CMT Music Awards. Could it be that the way they got together is a sign of a sweet romance that is eventually bound to end?

They Got Engaged Five Years Later

In 2010, Shelton was the “old-school and perfect” gentleman who asked for the blessing of Lambert’s father, got down on one knee, and popped the big question in the middle of a romantic stroll. Of course, the “Bluebird” crooner happily answered with a big yes!

Not only that, but Shelton managed to blow away Lambert with the best choice of diamond-and-platinum engagement ring. “It’s so much more perfect than I could have picked out myself,” Lambert said.

The couple tied the knot in Boerne, Texas, in May 2011 in front of 600 family members and friends – and some of the biggest stars in country music like Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson, who graced the reception’s stage with a song.

So Why Did Shelton and Lambert Get A Divorce?

The world of country music had indeed come to a screeching halt in 2015 when the genre’s reigning king and queen revealed that their four years of marriage has come to an end – and that their divorce was finalized on that same day.

“This is not the future we envisioned,” Lambert and Shelton said in a statement. “And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately.”

While the former lovers never confirmed the reason for their divorce, different rumors have been circulating endlessly.

TMZ has once reported that Lambert allegedly grew tired of Shelton spending most of his time in Los Angeles. It was in 2011 when Shelton began working as a judge on the NBC reality Television series, The Voice – which required him to be in Los Angeles to film the show. In fact, Shelton revealed that he had purchased a massive “home away from home” in Los Angeles, where he could stay whenever he was not in Oklahoma.

Unfortunately, Lambert hated Tinseltown, and the need to fly out just to see her husband – which at times, only just for a day – was tremendously difficult for her. Adding the couple’s touring schedules, you may say that it’s certainly a recipe for disaster.

Moreover, a source close to Lambert revealed to TMZ that the situation made the singer “feel like an abandoned wife” and in the end asserted that, “This is no way to live.”

Shelton dying to have kids while Lambert kept putting it off has also been said to take a toll on their relationship. Shelton has once revealed in an interview that having kids has been one thing he has been “looking forward to more than anything.” However, Lambert thought otherwise. With both of their careers are at their peak, Lambert doesn’t think having children only to raise them on a plane or a bus is such a good idea.

Of course, rumors about cheating have been swirling too! TMZ’s sources claimed that Shelton had a feeling that Lambert was cheating on him with fellow singer Chris Young, who previously opened for Lambert on Tour. Young has since denied the allegations.

Shelton’s 2016 hit song “She’s Got a Way with Words” – an enraged song taking aim at a cheating lover – even more fueled the rumors that Lambert had been unfaithful.

On the other hand, rumors have it that Shelton was allegedly having an affair with country singer Cady Groves – which Groves furiously refuted and even said to have badly affected her professionally and personally.

Neither Lambert nor Shelton has said anything about the cheating allegations.

Indeed, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton’s divorce was something we did not see coming in 2015. Many fans may have been sad to witness it – even endlessly rooting for them – but both country superstars have since moved on. Lambert is now happily married to former New York police officer Brendan McLoughlin. At the same time, Shelton is now engaged to pop star Gwen Stefani and is reportedly aiming for a summer wedding this year.
