Sugarland’s “Stuck Like Glue:” A Sassy Song To Make You Feel Good

This popular country music duo has this thing of releasing songs that, the moment you hear it, it gets lodged in your head for weeks. And they did just that when Sugarland’s “Stuck Like Glue” hit the radio a decade ago as the first single off their album The Incredible Machine.

Just as expected, the song became one of the most downloaded country ballads of all time and was also the best-selling track by a country duo until 2013, giving way to Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise.” It peaked No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, too.

Sugarland‘s Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush wrote “Stuck Like Glue” with songwriters Shy Carter and Kevin Griffin, who actually approached the duo with the song. The first time Nettles and Bush heard it, they thought it sounded just like them.

So, they went on writing the second verse and the bridge – and “it ended up being such a moment of fun even during the shows – we played it in our live show.” It is even one of the Sugarland songs to hold the “crown of levity.”

And can we talk about the unexpected reggae beats in the middle of the song? It was absolutely impressive! Nettles said that the reggae break was part of the duo’s goal to expand country music’s audiences, as they were always trying to take in more listeners into the genre.

Bush described the cheerful ballad – wherein the narrator sings that she and her lover “stuck like glue” – as a song about having fun. He noted that it is something that should make you feel good after listening, something that could change your day.

It also comes with a music video that’s as quirky as the song – where Nettles played the crazy stalker of actor Ryan McPartlin, while Bush acted as her henchman.
