Country music fans across the world got shocked when Harold Reid died at his home in Staunton, Virginia, on April 24, 2020, after bravely enduring a lengthy battle with kidney failure.

Reid’s songwriting skills, comical side, and remarkable bass voice were essential elements of the beloved and revered Country Music Hall of Fame vocal group, the Statler Brothers, who managed to release over 50 albums in just about 40 years.

Since the news of Reid’s death came out, country music stars have all turned to their social media page to pay their respects – this includes Toby Keith, who chose to honor the legendary artist’s life and legacy by singing the band’s most memorable hit in 1965, “Flowers on the Wall.”

During one episode of The Furniture Store Guitar Sessions uploaded on Toby Keith’s YouTube page, the country star can be seen donning a straw hat and white shirt with a cheap guitar in his hand – which is, by the way, he just bought from a local furniture store near his vacation home in Mexico after realizing he forgot to bring his instrument with him.

“We lost a good one,” the country singer said as he began strumming the first chord of “Flowers on the Wall.” Like most of Toby Keith songs, his rendition was enjoyable to listen to despite not making any attempts to impersonate Reid’s bass.

The upbeat but lovesick song written by group member Lew DeWitt peaked in popularity in 1966, spending four weeks at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and reaching No. 4 on Billboard Hot 100. It even took home a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary (R&R) Performance – Group.

The Statler Brothers then re-recorded “Flowers on the Wall” for their greatest-hits album called, The Best of The Statler Brothers. Tune in below and watch Toby Keith’s emotional tribute to the one and only Harold Reid.
