We have all seen the headline that crushed us this week: Hannah Lee Fowler just called it quits on her four-year (turning five) marriage with Sam Hunt. Fowler filed for divorce last February 18, claiming that Hunt cheated on her. And if that wasn’t unexpected enough, it was also revealed that she is actually pregnant with their first child and is due to give birth this May. But given the couple’s tumultuous on-and-off relationship, it seems like a divorce wasn’t entirely surprising.
Let’s revisit the hazy timeline of Sam Hunt and Hannah Lee Fowler’s love story, and discover how they turned from lovers to exes.
2008: Sam Hunt meets his muse
Sam Hunt first met his muse, an Alabama native named Hannah Lee Fowler, sometime in 2008. Hunt played football for the University of Alabama (which was how they probably crossed paths) from 2005 until 2007 when he graduated, and he had his eyes for the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately, his tryout didn’t go as planned, so he decided to pursue a music career in Nashville.
2014: Introducing his muse through his debut album “Montevallo”
In an interview, Sam Hunt revealed that he didn’t actually live in Montevallo, and he had never even visited it. But before he left for Nashville, he met a girl whose hometown was Montevallo, and a lot of the experiences he had with her during their short time together inspired a lot of the songwriting on the album.
2016: Getting Back Together
After their split, it was evident that Hunt was still not over Fowler. So, he decided to win her back. Hunt flew seven times to Hawaii in three months, trying to talk to Fowler about coming back. Fortunately for him, he was able to convince her on the seventh trip.
2017: From “Yes” to “I Do”
This year was quite an eventful year for the couple because this was the year that they got officially engaged and married.
January: She said “Yes”
In an appearance on The Bobby Bones Show, Hunt revealed that he popped the question during a trip to Israel over by the Sea of Galilee. But he recounted that his plans almost didn’t work out as they actually got into a small fight beforehand.
He said that something came up that irritated Fowler on the day of his big proposal, and he realized that it might mess up his plan. So, it kind of agitated him as well, and it turned into a fight, but interestingly, it led to the perfect opportunity for him to ask her to marry him.
And she said, “Yes.”
Around the same time as the official announcement of their engagement, Hunt also released an apology song for Fowler titled “Drinkin’ Too Much.” In the lyrics, he opened up about the ups and downs that their relationship went through, especially about introducing her to the public.
He told her sorry for naming his album ‘Montevallo’ and that strangers were hitting her up on social media. And he was also sorry that she couldn’t listen to the radio and that the privacy that she wanted was no longer there.
April: She said, “I Do”
The couple exchanged vows on April 15 in an intimate, traditional ceremony at a Methodist Church in Hunt’s hometown in Cedartown, Georgia.
But a few weeks before their big day, the then newly-engaged couple made one of their first public appearances together at the ACM Awards. Hunt even took a moment to flaunt Fowler, going up to her during his “Body Like a Back Road” performance and putting his arm around her.
May: First Red Carpet Appearance as a Married Couple
Hunt and Fowler made their first red carpet appearance as a married couple at the Billboard Music Awards. And in an interview with E! News, Hunt gushed that the married life was great. He also added that he felt a little bit taller wearing his wedding band.
2018: Sam Hunt thanks wife in speech
When the couple returned at the Billboard Music Awards, Hunt took home the top country song for “Body Like a Back Road.” And of course, during his speech, he did not forget to acknowledge and thank his wife for her selflessness, sacrificing so much for him and their future.
2021: Sam Hunt talks about starting a family
The couple was generally very private about their relationship, but during an appearance on KISS Country 99.9 Miami’s TC & Dina radio show, Hunt said that they have been talking seriously about starting a family. He added that he hoped to have some good news sooner than later.
2022: Calling it Quits
After four years of marriage, Hannah Lee Fowler is calling it quits. She filed her divorce complaint with accusations of “inappropriate marital conduct.” Additionally, the court has issued a statutory restraining order against Sam Hunt.
