On Monday night (April 11), George Strait made another record! During the 2022 CMT Music Awards, The King of Country Music took home the award for Performance of The Year for his rendition of Charley Pride’s 1970 classic hit, “Is Anybody Goin’ To San Antone.”
It was a solid category wherein fans get to decide who wins – and Strait was with very deserving nominees. There’s Chris Stapleton, Kane Brown, LANY, Mickey Guyton, and more. This was part of CMT Giants: Charley Pride, where several stars gathered to celebrate and pay tribute to the iconic life and legacy of the late trailblazing artist Charley Pride. The country legend died in December 2020 at the age of 86 following complications of COVID-19.
In addition to Strait, other country icons graced the event with memorable performances. This includes Alan Jackson, Darius Rucker, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, and many more. The first part of the show aired in the summer of 2021.
George Strait Can’t Even Believe He Won
While it’s quite amazing to think that it’s the first time George Strait has won a CMT Award within his legendary career spanning more than three decades, he has finally done it. He added another honor to his long list of accomplishments.
Unfortunately, Strait was not onsite to personally accept the award, but he sent a heartfelt video message where he expressed appreciation to CMT and all the fans who voted for him. “This is really special to me because this is a tribute song to the late Charley Pride, my friend,” Strait said in his message.
Truly, the King of Country Music is not stopping just yet.
