In 1983, George Strait earned his second No. 1 hit on the Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, thanks to “A Fire I Can’t Put Out.” It was released as the fourth and final single off his album Strait from the Heart.
It also achieved the same success in the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart, ranking No. 2.
A Song About A Man Struggling To Let A Woman Go
Written by Darryl Staedtler, “A Fire I Can’t Put Out” tells the story of a man who can’t get the memory of a woman out of his mind. He knows he needs to move on and turn his attention to someone new, but he’s having a hard time letting go of the feeling that felt so good when he was with her. He doesn’t have the strength to put out the fire that burns for his former lover.
