Is there any more epic than a group of country superstars joining in for a performance of “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)?”
Waylon Jennings was one of the country legends that changed country music forever. He started a tradition of creative control over his music – recording whichever songs came to mind, in every place he wanted, and with whomever he wanted. He was able to fully embrace the Outlaw movement that continues to develop and influence the music community.
A Group Of Country Superstars Influenced By The Legendary Singer Came Together
In 2015, an outlaw-worthy cast of artists gathered at Moody Theater in Austin, Texas, to pay tribute to Waylon Jennings being the genre’s trailblazer.
An extraordinary group of country stars took individual turns performing at what was called, Outlaw: Celebrating the Music of Waylon Jennings. Among the musical highlights was the duet by the extremely talented couple, Chris Stapleton and his wife, Morgane Stapleton, for the song “I Ain’t Living Long Like This.” There’s also Kacey Musgraves belting out “The Wurlitzer Prize” and Willie Nelson and Sturgill Simpson joining forces for “I Can Get Off on You.”

But the best part of the show had to be the show-closing group performance of “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love).” Jamey Johnson, Ryan Bingham, Kacey Musgraves, and Eric Church led the epic tribute – with each one singing a verse. At one point, Toby Keith joined Musgraves for a sweet duet just before the whole cast got into the chorus.
While listening to all those talented voices coming together will send a shiver down your spine, we were blown away when Willie Nelson‘s voice stood out, loud and clear. You will find the country legend at the center stage, holding the star-studded ensemble together.
Jennings released “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)” in 1977 as the first single off his album Ol’ Waylon. It also featured a guest vocal by Nelson that you can hear in the final refrain.
