Hick Hop, outlaw rap, country rap, whatever you feel like calling it, the fusion of country and hip hop has surprised many. Despite looking like an unlikely pair, the fusion of these two extreme genres works, and for almost 40 years, countless country rap songs have impressed many fans from both sides of the genre.

1. Sam Hunt – Drinkin’ Too Much 

The award-winning country singer Sam Hunt co-wrote Drinkin’ Too Much with producer Zach Crowell, Shane McAnally, and Stuart Hine. Hunt included this song on his studio album called Southside, which got released in 2020. 

2. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – Ghetto Cowboy

Ghetto Cowboy is the lead single by the American Hip Hop collective called Mo Thugs. It was from Chapter II: Family Reunion, their second studio album, released in 1998 under Mo Thugs/Relativity Records. The track contains replayed elements from The Gambler, a song by renowned country artist Kenny Rogers. 

3. Lil Nas X – Old Town Road

The hit song, Old Town Road, was first released independently in December 2018 by the rapper Lil Nas X as his debut single. He then recorded a remixed version of the song with country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and released it on April 5, 2019. 

The rapper included both versions of the songs in his second EP titled “7” in 2019. The remix version of the song became a massive hit, helping Lil Nas X achieve global stardom. 

4. Florida Georgia Line – Cruise 

Cruise is the first single from Florida Georgia Line’s EP “It’z Just What We Do” in 2012. Group members Brian Kelly, Chase Rice, Jesse Rice (No relation), and Tyler Hubbard with Joey Moi wrote the song. 

5. Blanco Brown – The Git Up 

Released as Blanco Brown’s debut single, The Git Up got described as the “next viral country rap song” or the “sequel” to Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road. It debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at No. 66 and peaked at 14. 

6. Nelly and Tim McGraw – Over and Over 

Over and Over is a song that focuses on regret. Famed rapper Nelly and country music singer Tim McGraw performed the song. While the music was written and produced by James D. Hargrove II and Jayson Bridges, Nelly was the one that wrote its lyrics. 

7. B.o.B and Taylor Swift – Both of Us 

Both of Us is the rapper B.o. B’s third single for his Strange Clouds album and features the vocals of famed singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. The two artists co-wrote the song with Ammar Malik, Cirkut, and Dr. Luke. 

8. Yelawolf – Till It’s Gone 

Till It’s Gone was written by Yelawolf, Mike Harnett, Matthew Hayes, and producer WLPWR. The song is featured in the artist’s album Love Story, released in 2015. It was also featured initially on some versions of Shady XV, a Shady Records compilation from 2014. 

9. Carrie Underwood and Ludacris – The Champion 

Performed by Carrie Underwood and Ludacris, The Champion was released on January 12, 2018, and served as the opening theme for the Super Bowl LII broadcast of NBC Sports. Carrie Underwood also included The Champion on her sixth album, Cry Pretty, as a bonus song. 

10. Jason Aldean – Dirt Road Anthem 

Originally sung and penned by Colt Ford and Brantley Gilbert, Jason Aldean covered Dirt Road Anthem for his My Kinda Party album in 2010. His version of the song received a nomination for Best Country Solo Performance at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. It is also the US’s best-selling male country solo artist song in digital history, selling over four million copies.
