Despite Merle Haggard’s most challenging obstacles in life, he still stood firm and sang his songs passionately, including “Family Bible.”
Background of The Song
“Family Bible” was originally written in 1957 by another great country music singer, Willie Nelson. But because of financial issues, he sold the piece to Paul Buskirk, which ended up in Claude Gray’s hands. Claude recorded the song, which peaked at the 7th spot on the charts.
When Claude released his recording, it prompted Willie to record his originally-written song and include it in his album Yesterday’s Wine in 1971.
Since Claude’s release, many artists have covered the song, including Merle Haggard.
Merle’s Live Performance

Merle’s soothing voice immediately floods our ears and soul as he calmly sings through the song. His manner of singing will have you swaying to the chill strumming of the guitar and the gentle sounds of the instruments in the background.

The perfect harmony of the voices also adds to the calming song.
While listening to the song, you may be prompted to reflect as you quietly enjoy the track. “Family Bible” shows the importance of finding time with God and thanking Him for all the blessings He gave to the family.
Furthermore, the piece allows for more quality time with family as you altogether sit around the table, share, reflect, and internalize what you feel about things in life.
The Bible is a holy book filled with teachings about values, attitudes, and several life lessons that most academic books don’t do. Reading the Bible helps the individual’s spiritual growth and also increases the time you spend with your family.
