Luke Combs released his highly anticipated fourth studio album Gettin’ Old on March 24, 2023. The 18-track collection comes with a cover song we never knew we needed – this is none other than his rendition of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.”

Chapman released the song in 1988, becoming her most popular and biggest hit worldwide. It even helped her win Best Female Pop Vocal Performance during the 1988 Grammy Awards.

Over three decades later, “Fast Car” is once again making a buzz. As of writing this article, Combs’ rendition has ranked No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart while peaking at No. 22 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart – making it his first song to enter the said chart.

The country superstar has also performed it live several times, and the song has swiftly become one of his concert staples on his world tour.

Luke Combs’ First Favorite Song

Luke Combs revealed that Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” – which is about the vicious cycle of a woman’s life – has been his longtime favorite. In fact, it’s the first song he remembered spending tons of time listening to at his father’s pickup when he was only a kid.

“Ever since I could play guitar, it was one of the first songs I wanted to learn,” the country superstar further revealed.

So, when he began hitting the road, Combs had been covering “Fast Car” – until he eventually decided that it was time to record a studio version of it and put it into his latest project. Just like a loyal fan, Combs’ version keeps a tight grip on the original’s iconic guitar riffs. To preserve the lyrics, he even referred to himself as a girl in the fourth verse.

Well, isn’t that just amazing?

Indeed, “Fast Car” is a stand-out track within the hitmaker’s fourth studio album, Getting’ Old – which also contains seventeen other songs of Luke Combs that were all original. So, tune in below and be blown away by Luke Combs’ cover of “Fast Car.”
