On the night of September 18, 2023, country music group Lady A took center stage at the 2023 ACM Honors to pay tribute to prolific singer-songwriter Clint Black, who has long been heralded as one of the brightest stars in the genre.

The award-winning vocal trio of Hillary Scott, Dave Haywood, and Charles Kelley delivered a very polished, stunning rendition of “A Bad Goodbye.” Haywood played his acoustic guitar while Kelley took the lead, showcasing her vocals that were as smooth as butter.

Scott then got in on the act with a slew of perfect harmonies. On top of that, the dimmed light inside the historic Ryman Auditorium sets the mood for the heart-wrenching ballad even more.

Black recorded “A Bad Goodbye” in 1993 as a duet with fellow country music singer Wynonna Judd after the duo’s Black and Wy tour. It was released as the first single off Black’s album, No Time to KillThe song peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. It even earned an ACM Awards nomination in the Vocal Event of the Year category.

Clint Black Took Home the ACM Poet’s Award During The 2023 ACM Honors

Following Lady A’s performance, the trio welcomed Clint Black on stage to receive his ACM Poet’s Award – an award given to a country music songwriter for remarkable and enduring musical and lyrical contributions throughout their career.

The “When I Said I Do” singer went on with his acceptance speech, confessing that he was near to tears watching his fellow country music artists getting recognized during the ceremony and feeling especially fortunate to be part of the genre’s community.

“It always just makes my heart swell up,” he said.

The living legend then expressed his gratitude for an award that said so much about his craft.

Anyway, make sure to watch and be amazed by Lady A’s performance of “A Bad Goodbye” by playing the video below.
