On Sunday evening (December 3), Scotty McCreery got the ultimate surprise of his career when country star Garth Brooks invited him to become the latest member of the Grand Ole Opry following his performance at the iconic Nashville venue. The event was not your ordinary Grand Ole Opry but was a part of the Opry Country Christmas celebration, which will run throughout December.
The Heartwarming Surprise
In a surprise-filled Opry Country Christmas show, Garth Brooks took center stage following Scotty McCreery’s spotlight artist performance and handed the “Damn Strait” singer a Christmas gift.
When McCreery tried to open the box, Brooks told him that “the gift inside isn’t here yet” as it was “merely an invitation.” Brooks then asked McCreery to be the latest member of the prestigious Grand Ole Opry.
McCreery was speechless for a moment but composed himself to gladly accept the invitation. He then credited Brooks for inspiring his musical journey and how the country star influenced him to pursue music as a living.
McCreery has also admitted that being a Grand Ole Opry member has always been at the top of his bucket list and goals. So, accepting this invitation is truly a dream come true for the North Carolina native.
Meanwhile, his wife, Gabi McCreery, and the couple’s one-year-old son, Merric Avery McCreery, watched the special moment unfold from the side stage.
McCreery made his Opry Debut in 2011, just over two weeks after winning American Idol Season 10. The country singer, who was only 17 years old then, performed his single “I Love You This Big” and George Strait’s “Check Yes or No.”
