As they say, there’s always a great story behind an enthralling love song like “Whenever You Come Around” by Vince Gill from his 1994 album When Love Finds You

He co-wrote the track with Pete Wasner, which Tony Brown produced under MCA. According to the credits, Trisha Yearwood also lent her voice for backing vocals. It debuted at number 60 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and eventually reached number two. The song stood the test of time, becoming one of Vince Gill’s signature songs and a classic in his discography.

One of the best compliments the song ever got was when the legendary Willie Nelson covered it for his 2014 album Band of Brothers. Gill has been a longtime fan of his and even described the man as one of the greatest American songwriters in history.

Meaning Behind The Song

The song hit the nail on how love can cause us to be helpless, at a loss for words, and just entirely at the mercy of another person.

According to Gill, the song was drawn from a heart-melting split moment in 1993. The singer revealed to the packed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, “This is a song that was inspired by a smile that I saw for the first time on the face of a woman that I’d never met.” And so, right after coming home, he wrote the song. And he had no idea that years later, he would wind up having a life together with that same woman.

Yes, you guessed it right. The woman in question was Amy Grant, his better half, the mother of his child, and a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter. The two married in 2000 and welcomed a daughter a year later.

Gill unknowingly manifested it. He was just a man who fell in love without a moment of hesitation. And if this isn’t the most romantic thing ever, then what is?

So, if you ever find yourself in the same situation, you should definitely try Vince Gill’s technique and write a song like “Whenever You Come Around.” Listen to the song below.
