So wonderful that it has been sung in churches and worship events all over the world. Although it didn’t land on any musical charts, it’s nonetheless considered one of Bill Gaither’s greatest hits.

Aside from its heartfelt tune, the timeless wisdom Gaither and his wife put into the song’s lyrics is also worth noting. Let’s find out the real soulful meaning behind this classic hit.

Meaning Behind the Song

“I Believe, Help Thou My Unbelief” is a powerful song about the paradoxical nature of faith. It encapsulates the struggle between having faith and doubt as people face uncertainties that challenge their belief in God.

It was inspired by the Biblical verse in the book of Mark 9:24 that says, “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, ‘I believe; help my unbelief!'”

In that passage, a father comes to Jesus seeking a cure for his son, who is afflicted by a demon. He declares his faith in Jesus while also admitting that he has doubts. That is when he said, “I believe, help my unbelief.” In response, Jesus shows His might and kindness by curing the kid.

This song is a reminder for us to surrender all our worries to Him, as it is Him who can help us through our struggles no matter how big or small it is. All it takes is for you to say, “I believe.”
