Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Emmy Russell Sings Her Original Song “Skinny” In American Idol Audition

“This is a dream,” Emmy Russell said when she first entered the American Idol 2024 audition and met the panel consisting of Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan. After an impressive performance of her original song, “Skinny,” she exited with three yeses, a golden ticket to Hollywood, and a dream slowly coming true.

“Tell us who you are”

When Luke Bryan asked Emmy to introduce herself, she timidly described herself as someone who had sung music her entire life and loved writing songs. She continued, saying that when she was younger, she used to sing on the road because her grandma was a country singer.

And that immediately piqued the interest of Bryan, one of the genre’s biggest stars. “Who’s your grandma?” he inquired.

Emmy’s answer surprised everyone: Loretta Lynn.

To many, Loretta Lynn was one of the biggest country music singers of all time, but to Emmy, she was simply her meemaw. But as her mom, Patsy Eileen, said, there were big shadows coming from a musical family. It wasn’t just Loretta. Patsy herself, the youngest of Lynn’s children and the twin of Peggy Jean was once the other half of the country duo, The Lynns

Nevertheless, she wanted Emmy not to try to fill the shoes of those before her. She wanted her to make her own shadow. She’s not just Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter.

“Skinny”

The reason Emmy decided to finally step on stage was to own her voice, and she really did with her original song “Skinny,” which was about an eating disorder. Her songwriting talent shone through in the song. And, of course, she impressed the judges with her delicate voice and graceful piano playing.

Bryan didn’t miss a beat and gave her his “yes.” Richie gave her a second yes. Perry was the last to say yes and commended Emmy’s audition.

She’s Emmy Russell from Nashville, Tennessee, and she’s ready to step into Hollywood and create her own path. Catch her performance of “Skinny” in the video below.
