In 1963, Johnny Tillotson released his rendition of country legend Ernest Ashworth’s number-one hit song “Talk Back Trembling Lips” as part of his album of the same title. Even though his cover did not enter the Country Chart, it still reached the US Adult Contemporary (Billboard) charts, landing at the no. 6 spot, and in the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at no. 7.
First recorded in 1963, the song was said to have been influenced by Paul Anka and Buddy Holly’s styling, both known for their unique singing voice. The line “Talk Back Trembling Lips” is simply a line of self-encouragement that many people would relate to.
The song was penned by John Loudermilk, who is known as a songwriter who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind through his words. In the song, the narrator tries to push himself into telling his partner what he truly feels whenever they face difficulties in their relationship.
