“Oklahoma” was written by D. Vincent Williams and John Allen. It was recorded by Billy Gilman for the album “One Voice” when he was only 11 years old. The album was released in October 2000 with “Oklahoma” being the second single from the album. ‘

The Billy Gilman hit song reached number 33 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart and reached number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100. Gilman’s debut album, “One Voice,” was certified double platinum in the U.S. It was also included in the Guinness Book of World Records as Billy Gilman was the youngest singer ever to reach the top spot on the Billboard Top Country Album charts.

In an interview with Billboard, Billy Gilman looked back on his career and on the songs of his success saying that lyrics have always been important to him. Unlike other child performers, he was happy to reminisce about the beginning of his music career. “How many people have been blessed with that kind of life? Whether it be in the worst moments or the best moments of it, people dream of doing what I do and continue to do,” he said.

Let’s dive in and get to know more about the meaning behind this country hit.

Meaning Behind The Song

Billy Gilman’s debut single, “Oklahoma,” is a song about a young boy reuniting with his biological father and half-brother after he lost his mother and was put under foster care. After being tossed around in different homes, he is elated that he has finally found his father in Oklahoma.

The sense of belonging and the need for a father are two deep sentiments that take center stage in the song’s lyrics. The love of a mother is also something that tugs heartstrings because she wanted her son to understand and have a father’s love. Even if the song is bittersweet, the melancholic tone is somewhat comforting because, finally, a young boy in longing now feels reconciled and loved.
