Country superstar Luke Bryan’s “Love You, Miss You, Mean It” officially arrived on April 5, 2024, and everyone fell in love with the nostalgic sound. The song was reminiscent of his 2010s-era catalog, which was undeniably filled with hits. Among these Luke Bryan’s hits are “That’s My Kind of Night,” “Play It Again,” “Rain Is a Good Thing,” “Someone Else Calling You Baby,” “I Don’t Want This Night to End,” “Drink a Beer,” and “Drunk On You” just to name a few.
He first showcased the song a few months ago, in February, during Universal Music Group’s annual luncheon at Country Radio Seminar in Nashville.
According to Bryan, the first thing he said when he heard the tune sent to him by songwriter Ben Hayslip was, “Stop the presses.” They then started playing it for the people, the label, and everybody picked it as the first single. And he was fired up to have it out. Fans also felt the same when they heard the teased clips, highly anticipating its official drop and hearing the whole song.
Meaning Behind the Song
“Love You, Miss You, Mean It” was written by Rhett Akins, Ben Hayslip, Jordan Minton, and Jacob Rice, and Bryan knew it was special the moment he heard it. “I knew it would resonate. It’s about young love and that whole process of trying to make relationships work through the on-again and off-again cycles,” he said.
The song opens with two small-town teenagers in love who have been unfortunately thrown apart by life. First, it was college forcing them into a long-distance relationship. They thought two hundred miles was nothing, but after that first fall, they started to drift apart. And he started to wonder what happened to her “love you, miss you, mean it” calls and the countin’ down the minutes and climbin’ up the walls for a kiss.
Years eventually went by, and pages got turned, but he never forgot about her. And then, late one night, out of the blue, his phone lit up. It was her. She said, “I don’t know about you / But I love you, miss you, meant it.” And there they were, two people in love – again. It may have been a sad journey, but in the end, love conquered all.
Bryan shared that he and his wife lived that same story during college and he knew a lot of people out there who had, too. And the track spoke to him on those levels. He added, “The song just felt right. It felt good, and it felt that way from the first listen. I heard it and it just felt like it had all the elements of a big hit song. You got to go in and record it and the rest is history.”
