American country musician and songwriter Al Dexter has written and recorded numerous Western country songs like Pistol Packin’ Mama, which have become big hits. That is why the world was devastated when the country legend’s death was announced in 1984.

Born in 1905, Clarence Albert Poindexter, known best as Al Dexter, was considered one of the first country singers to popularize the honky-tonk style in country music and the first country singer to perform on Broadway. He made his debut in 1936, but it took years before he had his first-ever massive global hit.

Al Dexter Cause of Death

According to the New York Times, Al Dexter died of a heart attack at the age of 78 in his home in Lake Lewisville on January 28, 1984.

There’s little to no information about his death, the hospital where he was taken, and what brought about his condition since Al Dexter was rather known as a private person throughout his career.

Al Dexter – His Legacy

During his career, Dexter has released numerous hits, including “Pistol Packin’ Mama,” “Rosalita,” and “I’m Losing My Mind Over You.”

Released in 1943, Pistol Packin’ Mama is widely known as Al Dexter’s greatest hit. With over 10 million copies sold, it is now considered one of the best-selling country songs of all time. During the darkest time in American history, Pistol Packin’ Mama became the anthem of hope and strength to move forward.

Rosalita, also released in 1943, is considered one of his most famous songs. It was such a hit to many that it remained at the number one spot in the “Most Played Jukebox Folk Records” charts for six months.

“I’m Losing My Mind Over You,” released in 1945, also instantly became a hit and peaked at no. 1 on the Folk/Juke Box charts, making it one of Al Dexter’s most listened songs.

Because of his amazing contribution to the music industry, Al Dexter was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971 and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

Years after his death, his son, Carl Wayne Poindexter, discovered his father’s 50 unreleased master tapes. As a commemoration to his late father, Carl decided to release the three-disc CD box set entitled Al Dexter’s Found Masters Volume 1-3 on his own music label, Al Dexter Estate Productions.

Even after his death, Al Dexter’s spirit continues to live through his songs, which have now become his legacy.
