George Strait bested both his indoor and outdoor record – and the fifty-year record of the largest attendance in the US – at his annual series of one-off performances during his semi-retirement, drawing in 110,905 fans at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field in College Station. But the most magical part of the evening’s live concert came when all of those hundred thousand of them joined him as he performed his signature hit  “Amarillo by Morning.”

There was an undeniable electrifying atmosphere as the whole stadium lit up doing a fan sing-along.

The King at Kyle Field: George Strait’s Rendition of “Amarillo by Morning”

George Strait’s country music career has been described by the Country Music Hall of Fame as “one of the most successful, enduring, and influential” not just in the genre but in any field. And one of his biggest contributions was his rendition of Stafford’s 1983 single “Amarillo by Morning.”

Stafford charted it to number 31, but it was Strait who shot it to Top 5 and made it a country classic. That is, his smooth, resonant vocals combined with an understated yet emotionally stirring delivery conveyed a sense of calm and resilience that perfectly encapsulated the persevering life of a rodeo cowboy.

In the video posted by Brent Zwerneman on X, Strait’s Kyle Field performance of the song started with a soft sing-along. And then, when Strait hit the line, “They took my saddle in Houston,” the whole crowd just started singing harder. It was a powerful moment for all George Strait fans to be there with him, joining him in an emotionally intense moment like just one voice blending with his.

This was definitely one for the books for Strait. First, it’s rare to have this successful, record-breaking turnout ten years after he bid his farewell in touring. And second, 110,000 fans remembering every lyric of the song decades after its release and singing it along with him was nothing short of unforgettable. It also showed how impactful his career was in the genre.

Experience the magic, too, by watching George Strait’s performance in the video below.
