In 2004, the country and pop world were surprised when rapper Nelly and country star Tim McGraw released their collaboration track “Over and Over” as part of Nelly’s album, Suit.

Despite doubts from fans that the song wouldn’t be a banger, considering it was hip-hop and country, Nelly dropped it nonetheless.

Right after its release, the song made it to multiple music charts, landing at no.1 on the US Pop Airplay (Billboard), no.1 on the US Rhythmic (Billboard), and no. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100. “Over and Over” instantly became one of Nelly’s greatest hits.

Meaning Behind the Song

Written by Nelly, this introspective ballad talks about the protagonist’s breakup with the girl he loves. It captures the miserable drag of the days after their relationship ended.

Despite their split-up, it seems like the protagonist can’t get over her that easily at all. He kept on thinking about her, and the thought of seeing her with another man was too painful for him to take.

Because of its straightforward and relatable meaning, “Over and Over” became an immediate hit not just in the US but also in Canada, Europe, and Australia. But aside from its meaning, the collaboration itself was something out of the ordinary.

Nelly grew up in the Midwest and was exposed to country music at a young age. When he finally decided to release a song that was close to home, not everyone was supportive, including his record label. He was finally getting his momentum in the industry, and they were worried that the collab with Tim McGraw would be the downfall of his career.

However, with much trust in music, Nelly pushed through with the project.

Since the song’s tune and overall composition are catchy and new to everyone, what was once thought to be Nelly’s career’s downfall has become the reason it has grown into what it is today.

So if you haven’t checked out Nelly and Tim McGraw’s “Over and Over” bop collaboration yet, what are you waiting for? You can watch their full performance below.
