A Peak Through George Jones Life With “Lord, You’ve Been Mighty Good To Me”

In 1965, country singer George Jones released one of his best gospel songs, “Lord, You’ve Been Mighty Good to Me,” as part of his album Old Brush Arbors.

Unlike other gospel songs, this is one of those few releases that would resonate with listeners of the past and of today. Growing up as a Christian, George Jones believed in God and saw him as his strength.

Although he has been known for his alcohol and drug use, his Christian roots and his angelic voice enabled him to produce soulful and heart-catching gospel songs. Because of his real-life experiences, this song became more personal and relatable to many.

Despite it not landing any place on the music charts, “Lord, You’ve Been Mighty Good To Me” is still considered one of George Jones’s greatest hits

As we dive right into the meaning behind the song, we’ll finally find out how “Lord, You’ve Been Mighty Good to Me” emphasizes George Jones’s real-life experiences that brought him closer to God.

Meaning Behind the Song

Written by E. Montgomery and George Stones, the song simply describes a protagonist who is trying to overcome all the predicaments he faces in life.

Instead of complaining, he sees these challenges as something that will help him in the long run –he knows that God has been mighty good to him after all, just like George Jones did.

As a known country singer, many people think that he is a hypocrite for releasing gospel songs even though he is quite a problematic artist himself. Even after he died in 2013, he was still known as the country singer who got addicted to drugs and alcohol.

However, George Jones is no hypocrite at all. In fact, he was the troubadour of the Christ-haunted South. The way he expresses his raw emotions through his voice reminds everyone about the nature of sin and how they should long for repentance while it’s still not too late, making him nothing but a good Christian.
