When Baylee Littrell stepped onto the American Idol stage, most of the judges had no idea who he was. But that changed fast.

Performing an original song, “Waiting on Myself to Die,” the 22-year-old immediately caught the panel’s attention with his deep, traditional country sound. But it wasn’t until Carrie Underwood noticed something familiar about him that he revealed his last name—Littrell.

Cue the shock.

Baylee is the son of Brian Littrell, a member of the Backstreet Boys, one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. That revelation led to an emotional moment when Brian joined his son on stage for an impromptu duet, stunning the audience and judges alike.

But for Baylee, this audition wasn’t about his father’s legacy—it was about proving he’s more than just the son of a pop superstar. And his performance did just that.

A Country Heart in a Pop World

Baylee Littrell may have been raised in the glow of pop stardom, but country music has always been his true north. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he grew up on the sounds of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and George Strait, thanks to his grandparents. While his father was topping charts with pop anthems, Baylee fell in love with country music’s storytelling and raw emotion.

“I grew up with my grandparents playing classic country,” he shared in interviews. “That sound—the storytelling, the honesty—it’s in my blood.”

His first big break came in 2019 when, at just 16, he released his debut album 770-Country. This project blended modern and traditional country influences. The album, which featured collaborations with Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line and songwriter Seth Ennis, showcased Baylee’s ability to craft nostalgic and fresh songs. Tracks like “Boxes” resonated with listeners, racking up over 1.8 million streams on Spotify.

By 2022, Baylee had released his follow-up EP, Vol. One featuring songs like “Gone” and “Be-Leavin’,” which further solidified his sound. He even hit the road, opening for Chris Lane and performing on the Backstreet Boys’ DNA World Tour—a full-circle moment that placed him on some of the biggest stages in the world.

Stepping Out of His Father’s Shadow

Despite his talent, comparisons to his father have followed him everywhere. Some critics have dismissed him as just another industry kid riding on a famous last name. But Baylee isn’t having any of it.

“Following in my dad’s footsteps is intimidating,” he admitted. “His career is one of the most iconic in music history. But I’m not trying to be a pop star. I’ve been a country artist since day one.”

And now, with his American Idol audition going viral, he’s facing his biggest test yet. Some cheer him on, while others question whether he deserves the spotlight. But Baylee isn’t fazed.

“I get my voice from Dad,” he said. “But I’m here to prove myself.”

With a golden ticket and a genre always searching for fresh voices, Baylee Littrell is ready for country music to finally see him for who he truly is—not just a Backstreet Boy’s son, but a country artist in his own right.
