There’s a good reason why Alan Jackson is one of the most beloved singers among country fans. He has this pure country voice that can tell emotional stories and makes him a captivating entertainer.

In 2003, Jackson released another poignant song, “Remember When” as the second and final single from his compilation album, Greatest Hits Volume II album. It spent two weeks at the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in February 2004 and peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Remember When” Serves A Source of Reflection for Alan Jackson

Written entirely by Alan Jackson himself, the song serves as a source of reflection for the country singer, as he looked back on his life with his wife, Denise. It traces the early stages of their relationship all the way into their future together after their children have grown and moved away.

The couple met at Dairy Queen in their hometown of Newnan, Georgia, and were just teenagers when they married in December 1979. They moved to Nashville six years later so Jackson could pursue his future in country music.

Ever since then, his wife stood by him every risky and rewarding step of the way. They have held tight to the memories they’ve shared, and have cherished the good and the bad. The song serves a great reminder for them to “remember” their younger years, raising their three beautiful daughters, and both the tougher and easier times.

“Remember when we said when we turned gray, when the children grow up and move away. We won’t be sad, we’ll be glad. For all the life we’ve had,” Jackson sings.

The song holds a very special place in Jackson’s heart, as well as for many fans. Some would even say that “Remember When” is one of his all-time greatest and most memorable songs. And it seems like it will always be a crowd favorite, so when he appeared at the Grand Ole Opry in October 2015, it was the perfect song to perform.

In a clip released by the Opry, Alan Jackson proved once again why he’s one of country music’s most successful artists. The country star can be seen center stage playing his guitar as he sings the thoughtful song. Jackson even teared up a little during most of the performance, showing how strong his connection still is to the words he wrote nearly two decades ago.

Jackson’s delivery was tender. It drew the audience in from the very beginning. The minutes seem to fly by as he sang the story of his life in the past, present, and future. Jackson was honored through a warm round of applause at the end of this performance, which was well-earned.

The official music video for “Remember When” has also helped propel the song to the heart of many country fans. Directed by Trey Fanjoy, the short clip features Alan Jackson singing the song while sitting on a stool playing the guitar while home movie footage of Jackson’s childhood and life plays in the background. There were also some scenes where Alan Jackson can be seen dancing with his wife, Denise.
