“And I’m never doing that again.”
Blake Shelton may be known for his chart-topping hits and quick-witted humor. Still, even country superstars have regrets—especially when it comes to ink. Shelton sat down with CMT to share one of his biggest regrets, which he’s stuck with for life: a tattoo that didn’t turn out as planned.
The Tattoo That Became a Lifelong Regret
In the early 2000s, long before he became a household name on The Voice, Shelton decided to get some fresh ink. He went with a barbed wire design wrapping around his left forearm, with paw prints scattered between the lines. It sounded good in theory, but Shelton had second thoughts as soon as the ink settled.
“You know, they say tattoos are addictive? I got this tattoo about 20 years ago and decided it was, in the moment, one of the worst mistakes of my life,” Shelton admitted in a clip CMT shared on Instagram.
Unlike some artists who collect tattoos like trophies, Shelton had the opposite reaction. Instead of going back for more or trying to fix the design, he made a firm decision: never again. And he’s kept his word. To this day, that’s the only tattoo he has.
A Lesson in Thinking Twice
Shelton’s honesty about his tattoo regret isn’t just entertaining—it’s a lesson in making permanent decisions wisely. While plenty of country artists embrace ink as part of their identity—think Miranda Lambert’s playful arrow tattoo or Eric Church’s classic chest piece—Shelton’s story proves that not every tattoo is a treasured keepsake.
For Shelton, the regret doesn’t run too deep. After all, it hasn’t hurt his career, personal life, or signature charm. But it serves as a cautionary tale he could pass down to his stepsons. If anything, his experience might make him the go-to guy for advice when they start thinking about their own tattoos.
Still the Same Blake Shelton
If there’s one thing Shelton’s fans know about him, it’s that he doesn’t take himself too seriously. Whether he’s roasting his fellow country stars, cracking jokes about his Oklahoma farm life, or poking fun at his own decisions, his ability to laugh at himself is part of what makes him so likable.
At the end of the day, a regrettable tattoo is just a tiny chapter in Shelton’s story. With a decades-long career, a string of No. 1 hits, and a life built with wife Gwen Stefani, there’s no doubt he’s doing just fine—barbed wire tattoo and all.
