In 1968, country superstar Conway Twitty released a cover of Merle Haggard’s classic hit song “Mama Tried” as part of his album, Next in Line

The album consists of eleven cover songs, and “Mama Tried” is probably the most popular cover. Originally released by Merle Haggard in 1968, the song is simply about a son who admires his mother for staying strong despite the difficulties they face in life—from his father dying to the son’s rebellion, but in the end, at least his “Mama Tried.”

Over the years since its release, artists like The Everly Brothers, Joan Baez, and David Allan Coe have released covers of the song.

But for today, let’s focus on Conway’s Twitty’s amazing cover – to see what made his rendition so popular.

Conway Twitty’s Amazing Cover!

Since Conway Twitty was relatively new to the country music scene when the song was released, he decided to create his album “Next in Line,” which contained covers of country songs from different known artists to showcase his talent for adapting different musical styles—and it seems like he made the right choice since the album became his first country no. 1 hit.

In his cover of Merle Haggard’s classic hit “Mama Tried,” he proves that he is a master of his craft. His voice complimented the song in amazing ways; in fact, he almost sounded like Merle Haggard!

Although there is no doubt that they have their own styles, in this particular version, it seems like Conway has mastered mimicking Merle’s technique. This makes his version almost sound the same as the original, still having that Yeehaw feel to it—making his rendition worth listening to.

So, if you are interested in listening to Conway Twitty’s amazing cover of Merle Haggard’s classic hit “Mama Tried,” you can watch his full performance below.
