For nearly a decade and a half, Coy Bowles has been an integral part of Zac Brown Band, donning his fedora and guitar.
Born and raised in Thomaston, Georgia, Bowles started strumming his guitar at age eleven. Two years later, he was already in a band called Betty Doom – playing punk rock and rock ‘n roll in various events at his hometown and even at local churches.
But Being a Musician Wasn’t Coy Bowles’ First Dream
Believe it or not, Coy Bowles dreamed of being a doctor at some point in his life. So, after high school, Bowles chose to study biology and environmental sciences at West Georgia College. He was a hair’s breadth away from graduating from college when he decided to pursue music as a career.
He took a year off and spent eight hours a day mastering his craft. Eventually, he got into Georgia State University’s School of Music, where he earned his Bachelor of Music in the Jazz Studies Program.
After graduating, he launched his own band, Coy Bowles and The Fellowship. They opened for Zac Brown Band in Alabama – but in a twist of fate, he became a member of the three-time Grammy Award-winning band just two weeks later.
He Is Not Limiting His Talent To Music

But Coy Bowles hasn’t limited himself to writing songs along with his fellow Zac Brown Band members. Interestingly, the talented musician is also a prolific author of children’s books.
He has penned four children’s books over the years – with 2018 Behind the Little Red Door being the latest one. This book is actually in partnership with the Georgia Pre-K program as they celebrated their 25th anniversary. Remarkably, more than 80,000 copies of the book were given out for free across the state of Georgia.
And it looks like the talented guitarist and keyboardist has little ones of his own to read them to. Bowles and his wife Kylie are loving parents to two gorgeous daughters: Hattie and Millie Mercy.
Well, we can’t wait to witness more of Coy Bowles’ creativity.
