With a career in the country music scene for over 50 years, Parton is known for singing several gospel songs, like “The Seeker,” “I Believe,” and “Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher.” In 1999, she released her cover of the hit gospel song “Power in the Blood” as part of her album Precious Memories, and it did not disappoint.

Dolly Parton’s songs are mostly filled with gospel themes because she herself is a religious person. During an interview with NPR, Parton mentioned that since her family was so poor, the only book available for them to read was the Bible. Because of that, she has grown closer to God even at such a young age, singing at churches every Sunday. Since she can connect to her songs a lot deeper than most think, her gospel covers instantly became a hit among listeners.

Let us now dive into the meaning behind the gospel hit song “Power in the Blood.”

Meaning Behind the Song

Written by Lewis E. Jones, the song was originally released in 1899 as a religious Hymn. It was not until 1913 that activist Joe Hill eventually released it as a song.

The song powerfully conveys the message of hope that Jesus’s blood will cleanse our sins and make us pure once again. It reminds us that no matter how hard life can be, we can always ask God to lend us a helping hand.

Because of its meaning, the song instantly became a hit among many and eventually became one of the most favorite gospel hymns of all time.

Dolly Parton’s cover, in particular, is unique because of her signature vibrato and country vibe, which makes it quite refreshing to hear. That is maybe why it instantly became a hit among many, making it one of Dolly Parton’s greatest gospel hits.
