In 1975, Dolly Parton released yet another encouraging gospel song, “The Seeker,” as part of her album Dolly.
Right after its release, the song immediately hit the charts landing at no. 1 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks, no. 2 on the US Hot Country Songs (Billboard), and no. 5 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles (Billboard), making it one of Dolly Parton’s greatest hits.
Dolly Parton is usually known as America’s dynamic pop-culture icon. Her songs like “Me and Little Andy,” “Here You Come Again,” and “But You Know I Love You” are among the top hits she has released throughout her career.
But with this particular song, it seems like Dolly Parton decided to go out of her usual music releases, which mostly focus on topics like love, so fans were a bit surprised when the iconic country star released a gospel song of her own. “The Seeker” immediately got people’s attention within a few weeks after it was released.
Meaning Behind the Song
As unbelievable as it may sound, Dolly Parton did mention in her book Songteller that she didn’t necessarily intend for the song to be religious. She said the song came at a time when she was going through a lot and that it was for people who are always struggling for some kind of truth. The song simply talks about her shortcomings and how she asks for guidance.
What is unique about this song is the fact that Parton never explicitly mentions God in the lyrics, but the listeners were still able to interpret a beautiful meaning behind it. Since the song received phenomenal success, Parton decided to re-record the song for her 1995 album, Something Special.
