You can’t help but get on your feet and start tapping along with this country rock song from Kentucky Headhunters. “Honky Tonk Walkin’” appears on the band’s 1993 album Rave On! On their 1994 album, Best of the Kentucky Headhunters: Still Pickin’, they still included the song.

The Kentucky Headhunters

Fans of southern rock definitely have a song from Kentucky Headhunters in their playlists.  The band introduced a hybrid of honky-tonk, blues, and southern rock that pleased listeners of both rock and country music. The band began in 1968. It started when Brothers Fred and Richard Young began playing with their cousins Greg Martin and Anthony Kenny. They were first known as Itchy Brother. As years went by, some members went to a separate direction while others welcomed new members of the band.

“Dumas Walker” was the first chart-topper hit from the group from their second album, Pickin’ on Nashville. The song tells about a retailer and world-class marbles champion, Dumas, from Moss, Tennessee. Aiming for more success, the band continued to release more songs. “Oh Lonesome Me,” released in 1990, eventually became the group’s biggest hit. Don Gibson first introduced the song in 1957.

Honky Tonk

Urban Dictionary defines honky-tonk as a rowdy bar that plays “honky tonk” country music.

Country Music will never be complete without honky-tonk songs. They have become a part of the fabric genre itself. Honky-tonk music brought a big break from the course of traditional country music. Most of the honky-tonk songs detail the pleasures and miseries of urban life, and were performed in “honky-tonks.”

Classic honky-tonk artists include Lefty Frizzell, Ray Price, Kitty Wells, George Jones, and towering above them all is Hank Williams.

Country music may continue to be changed and refashioned.  However, the touch of honky-tonk will always be observed no matter what.
