Kelly Clarkson’s divorce may have been something she never expected to happen when she married Brandon Blackstock seven years ago, but that doesn’t mean she did not prepare for it. The “Since U Been Gone” singer entered the marriage with eyes wide open.
Less than a week before their intimate wedding at Blackberry Farm in Tennessee on October 15, 2013, Clarkson and Blackstock signed a prenuptial agreement. Today, Clarkson is hoping the divorce process will go smoothly, as she asks the court to enforce the agreement.
Clarkson filed to end their marriage, earlier this month at a Los Angeles court, citing irreconcilable differences. Clarkson, who is said to be worth a whopping $45million, reportedly wants the court to dismiss her husband’s ability to seek spousal support as agreed on the couple’s prenuptial agreement back in 2013.
She shares two children with Blackstock – daughter River Rose, and son Remington Alexander. It was reported that Clarkson is also asking the court to order ‘joint legal and physical custody.’
As far as child support goes, it has not been listed in this filing. It may be covered by the prenuptial agreement, but if not, it will simply be determined by Clarkson and Blackstock’s income, per California divorce law.
The papers also list the couple’s separation date as “TBD.”
Their Divorce Came As A Surprise
Clarkson and Blackstock’s divorce came as a surprise to fans, especially that it happened only a few weeks after Blackstock made a brief appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show to wish her a happy birthday. Blackstock appeared in a cute video for the pop star, together with their children and his 13-year-old son from a previous relationship.
“Just now seeing this, and I am bawling,” Clarkson wrote on her social media account. “They’re all so cute! I’ve had a bit of a rough week, and this just turned it around.”
Clarkson first met Blackstock in 2006 but did not start dating until 2012. “When I met Brandon, I wasn’t looking for a friend,” Clarkson admitted in a 2017 Redbook interview. “I have a lot of great friends! I was looking for a lover. I had never found someone I was truly passionate about, who I wanted to stay in bed with all day. The fact that I did, well…I was going to latch on and take advantage of that.”
