Buck Owen’s 1964 track “Crying Time,” popularized by Ray Charles, is making waves again after Lukas Nelson and Sierra Ferrell shared a casual snippet of their take on the song.
In the video Ferrell posted on her Instagram, she was wearing a light blue and brown full-fledged cowboy outfit – from the hat to the fringes down to the boots – by High Class Hillbilly and Nikki Lane, standing next to a piano with Nelson in a brown jacket and blue cap behind the keys.
Lukas Nelson started playing the chorus, blending his voice with Sierra Ferrell in what seemed an unreal moment. Their vocals had the same vintage-sounding tone that would easily grab the attention of anyone listening to them. Add to that Ferrell’s spellbinding style, and the song just hit so differently.
After the chorus, it was time for Nelson’s voice to shine through. He sang that first verse with such ease, honoring the original while still managing to put his own brand into it. It was a treat to the ears. They joined back again in the chorus, and it was just so addicting that you might not notice the reel looping so many times already.
In the caption, Ferrell wrote, “Thankful for singing songs with friends and enjoying the warm feeling of harmonies.” She then tagged her duet partner, saying how she hoped to sing with him again soon. Finally, to commemorate the moment, they took a Polaroid.
It really seemed like the two enjoyed singing together. In her song “American Dreaming,” released in March 2024, she enlisted Nelson and Melody Walker for the background vocals. They also shared a stage at the DelFest 2024 in Cumberland, Maryland, where they covered Adele’s “Someone Like You,” which was dubbed the “cover we didn’t know we needed.”
