Michael James Peterson, popularly known by his stage name, Michael Peterson, has been a well-known personality in the music industry for many years and is often in the headlines. He has an overwhelming charm that rivets the attention of every listener.

Other than that, his passion for music is really undeniable, and that’s why he has been able to acquire a large number of followers throughout the years. And for those who didn’t know, his debut album is probably one of the most successful debuts ever recorded in history.

Released in 1997 as part of his self-titled debut album, his song “Drink, Swear, Steal & Lie” was able to hit the charts peaking at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks. It is considered one of Michael Peterson’s greatest hits

The song was written by Michael Peterson together with Paula Carpenter. The song has a yet interesting meaning, and here it is.

Meaning Behind the Song

Sometimes, love makes us do things that we didn’t anticipate we could do. It may be on the good side or the bad. And in this Michael Peterson song, love indeed breaks the rules.

As the song’s title implies, it is about a man whose father advises him not to steal, swear, drink, or tell lies. But as he aged, as most of us experience, he ultimately fell in love. He discovers that he is breaking all of his father’s rules since he is now drinking from a woman’s love cup, refusing to give her up, stealing all of her kisses beneath the moon, and lying close to her.

And since a lot of people can relate to the message of the song, as most of us have probably fallen crazy in love with someone to the point we started breaking the rules, this may be the reason why it was just a hit to many listeners.
