Megan Moroney is enjoying another success with her all-too-relatable “I’m Not Pretty.”

In 2022, Moroney shot up as one of country music’s rising stars when her song “Tennessee Orange” went viral, gaining her a huge and rapid fan following. In the span of just a few months, recognitions have been pouring in for her, coming from all directions, including the 2023 ACM Awards for New Female Artist of the Year.

So, the Georgia native prepared her debut full-length album, Lucky, featuring fiery thirteen tracks. At the top of that list is Moroney’s follow-up single, “I’m Not Pretty,” released to country radio in August 2023. As expected, the song swiftly ascended to the top of the charts, marking yet another triumph for Moroney.

Meaning Behind The Song

Written by Megan Moroney alongside Micah Carpenter, Mackenzie Carpenter, and Ben Williams, “I’m Not Pretty” sings about becoming the target of her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend’s anger. She imagines scenarios where her ex’s new girl can’t shake thoughts of her. Well, she got evidence nevertheless – an awkward moment when the new girlfriend accidentally liked one of her old Instagram photos.

In the chorus, Megan Moroney keeps singing about the new girl’s obsession, which is starting to go beyond her presence but also about how she looks. However, the singer isn’t bothered by this “Queen of the Mean Girls committee.” In fact, she’s quite content to let the hate go on.

Interestingly, the country newcomer revealed that “I’m Not Pretty” is loosely based on a true story. She recalled the moment when she caught her ex-boyfriend’s new flame scrolling through her Instagram in the wee hours of the morning. In a slip-up, the girlfriend ended up liking a Spring Break picture from 2016 in Panama City Beach, Florida.

Rather than getting upset, Moroney turned this unexpected moment into a playful anthem, flipping the script on the chaos.
