Randy Travis has covered several gospel songs like “Blessed Assurance,” “The Unclouded Day,” and “Three Wooden Crosses.” In 2003, he released his version of the contemporary Christian song “Open The Eyes of My Heart” as part of his album Worship and Faith, which reached the no. 10 spot on the Christian Album Charts and no. 9 on the Top Country Albums Chart, earning him a gold certificate from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Randy Travis’ cover of the gospel song became such a hit among listeners because of his signature baritone voice. It was also more uplifting and relayed the typical country music style, emphasizing themes of hope and perseverance. Paul Baloche’s version, on the other hand, was more introspective and focused on personal worship and connection with God.

Let’s now dive into the meaning behind his gospel hit song.

Meaning Behind the Song

“Open the Eyes of My Heart” was originally released by Paul Baloche in 2000 and is based on Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians in the Bible.

The song reminds listeners that as we tend to live in a world dominated by evil, craving for more worldly things, blinding us in ways we didn’t know possible, we need to cling to God and ask him to help us open our hearts to see the beauty of life once again.

According to its original writer, Paul Baloche, in an interview, he wrote the song intending for it to become a prayer. He mostly got his inspiration from the pastors in his church, who would always let him borrow and play these prayer tapes. These tapes would later ignite a fire in him to create a song that would connect people to the Lord.

Although his version didn’t land on any chart, it is still considered one of Randy Travis’s greatest hits because of how he gave a fresh take on the classic hit.
