While it’s less than a month before its airtime, this year’s Oscar nominees have already been out. With a multitude of significant talent following behind every award, the 91st Oscar Awards will surely be an amazing night.
Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the show will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 24, 2019. The Oscars will honor the best of the best films and the people behind them in 24 categories.
While Roma and The Favourite led the nominations with 10 nods, other films were not far behind. A Star Is Born, a film starred by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, earned 8 nods from the academy. And, your favorite actor might just be to thank.
A Star Is Born: A Story of Music and Inspiration
While other films talk about love, poverty, racial discrimination, among others, A Star Is Born, on the other hand, revolves around the burning passion for music of an aspiring singer. The movie narrates the story of a famous country singer (played by Bradley Cooper), who battles alcohol and drug addiction. He then falls in love with an aspiring young singer (played by Lady Gaga) after meeting her.
Both singers hit it off and he helps propel her career into the music industry. Then, tensions fly and relationships are broken throughout the emotional film. This includes the rift between Cooper’s character and Sam Elliott’s, who plays his older brother and manager.
Sam Elliott and His 50 Years of Colorful Career
Elliott plays as a supporting character in this 2018 film. Despite this, his journey to stardom actually started sometime 50 years ago. In fact, he has been starring in the big screen for decades already. His breakthrough film, Lifeguard, was a sensation in the late 1970s.
In addition to Elliott’s outstanding talent, his charming persona and deep voice had fans swooning over every character he portrayed.
Fast forward to 2018, Elliott finally got one of the credits he deserves. He earned critical acclaim for his performance in A Star Is Born. He won a National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor. In addition, his most recent accomplishment for the film is his 91st Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
In an interview with Deadline, Elliott’s reaction to his nomination was everything.
“I think the thing off the top of my head might be, ‘It’s about f—ing time.’ Beyond that, it’s really about the work; it’s just about the creative process. It’s great to be recognized for that. That’s really all it’s about.”
Humbled as he is always been, he continued and pointed out his fellow actors:
“I think my biggest takeaway is just how fortunate I am. Number one, to still be in the game, but to have an opportunity to work with two people like Bradley and Stefani (Lady Gaga), it’s just extraordinary. Fifty years into the game and all of a sudden to have anything do with this, to be connected with a film like this, it’s just a wonderful gift.”
Well, congratulations to Sam and the whole cast of A Star Is Born for their nomination! Don’t forget to tune into the 91st Oscar Awards night on Feb. 24 at 5 PM PT/ 8 PM ET on ABC.
