On February 14, 2020, Nashville concertgoers were treated to an unforgettable surprise during Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Tour stop at Bridgestone Arena. It wasn’t just Madea that left the crowd laughing and cheering that evening. Still, country music superstar Chris Stapleton gave fans an unexpected live performance of his iconic hit, “Tennessee Whiskey.”

Stapleton, who was in the audience enjoying the Valentine’s Day event, suddenly stood up from his seat, microphone in hand, and stunned the audience with his impromptu rendition of the beloved country classic.

A Valentine’s Day Surprise That Had the Crowd on Their Feet

In a fan-filmed video, the unmistakable tune of “Tennessee Whiskey” begins playing over the speakers just as Stapleton rises from his seat. Initially, the crowd seemed uncertain of what was happening. However, as soon as Stapleton began singing the famous opening lines, “Used to spend my nights out in a bar room,” the entire arena erupted into cheers.

Stapleton’s rich, soulful voice filled the venue, instantly capturing the attention of every audience member. His performance turned into an arena-wide sing-along, as the crowd couldn’t resist joining in on the iconic song. It wasn’t long before Stapleton had the entire Bridgestone Arena on its feet, singing with him to every word.

Tyler Perry, creator of the Madea character, captured the unexpected moment and posted it on his Instagram page, clearly excited by the surprise. “Madea could not come to the end of the farewell tour and have [Chris Stapleton] in the audience in Nashville, Tennessee, and not have him sing a verse of ‘Tennessee Whiskey!’ And he KILLED IT!!” Perry wrote. He thanked Stapleton for the impromptu performance and added, “Blessings to you, your wife, and them babies!”

The Song That Redefined Stapleton’s Career

“Tennessee Whiskey” was already a country classic, written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove and initially recorded by George Jones in 1983. However, Chris Stapleton’s 2015 performance of the song with Justin Timberlake at the CMA Awards brought it back into the spotlight. That moment marked the beginning of Stapleton’s meteoric rise to fame.

The song became one of the defining tracks from Stapleton’s debut album Traveller, which catapulted him from a successful songwriter to one of the biggest solo artists in country music. “Tennessee Whiskey” showcases Stapleton’s signature blend of country, blues, and soul, and it has remained a fan favorite at his concerts ever since.

An Iconic Moment That Fans Will Remember

Chris Stapleton’s surprise performance at the Madea’s Farewell Tour stop was memorable for fans lucky enough to be there. With no elaborate stage setup or prior announcement, Stapleton’s raw talent took center stage, again showing why he’s one of the most respected names in country music. His voice alone was enough to fill the arena and bring the crowd to its feet.

Though this surprise performance took place in 2020, Stapleton continues to tour and delight fans across the country with his electrifying live shows. If you’ve never seen him perform “Tennessee Whiskey” live, be sure to catch him the next time he’s on the road.
