In 2004, The Notorious Cherry Bombs, a country music supergroup, released the country hit song “It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long,” which peaked at number 47 on the US Country Music Charts.

After years of being inactive, the Cherry Bombs members decided to release their debut album, “The Notorious Cherry Bombs,” for the first time after long years of performing in events and bars.

Their self-titled album has earned remarkable support and admiration from the group’s fans, establishing their debut single “It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long” as one of The Notorious Cherry Bombs chart-topping debut songs of all time.

Aside from that, the music video was a lot of fun to watch, with certain elements of humor and drama integrated into each scene, hooking fans into watching it more.

But what made this song such a hit aside from its catchy tune is the inspiration behind the song.

In one of Vince Gill’s performances, he explained that he got the idea from his Dad, who was a big fan of Dolly Parton then.

After having the chance to work with the iconic Parton once, Vince promised his dad that he’d make a song about it but could only write about it after his dad’s passing.

Upon its release, it was only natural for audiences to get curious as to how Vince’s mother reacted. But to everyone’s surprise, she was cool about it and even stated that as long as her son was happy, she would support him no matter what.

Meaning Behind the Song

“It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long” is a song about how one’s love for their lover may change over time.

In the song, the protagonist appears upset that his wife isn’t the same person he fell in love with. The nagging and the never-ending unreasonable complaints begin to consume his head.

Although he wishes things to be the same as they were, the protagonist cannot deny the fact that it is challenging to kiss the lips of someone who bites his ass all day.
