In 1992, The Statler Brothers released a cover of the hit gospel song “Rock of Ages” on their album Gospel Favorites. The song was originally written as a hymn by Augustus Toplady in 1763. What makes it extra special is that it revolves around Toplady’s real-life experience.

According to The Times, Toplady was traveling when he suddenly found himself stuck in a storm. Immediately, he tried to find shelter in George of Burrington Combe. Where he got the inspiration to write this classic Christian hymn, which would slowly become a religious anthem in the next centuries.

Over the coming years, many singer-songwriters got inspired by the song’s message. This resulted in the hymn becoming an official gospel song sung in churches today. Some of the most notable versions were 1914 Alma Gluck and Louise Homer’s cover and the 1992 version the Statler Brothers released.

The Statler Brothers’ Rendition of ‘Rock of Ages'”

The Statler Brothers version, in particular, was among listeners’ favorites because of how good their storytelling abilities are. With their angelic voices accompanied by the light touch of the piano, the whole performance becomes more magical than it already is. That is why this cover is considered one of The Statler Brothers’ greatest hits

“Rock of Ages” is simply a song about finding comfort in God’s hand. It emphasizes how the narrator tries to seek God for help.

It is a song that would open our eyes to the truth that God is like a Rock of Ages, an immovable constant that would forever be powerful. So for us to be able to repent for our sins, we need to ask him for his hand, as he is the only one capable of helping us through the tough times.

So if you haven’t checked it out yet, you can watch The Statler Brothers’ cover of the hit gospel song “Rock of Ages” below.
